Phoenix Coyotes Notes

The Phoenix Coyotes (30-36-7) return home to take on the Edmonton Oilers (35-29-9) at Jobing.com Arena tonight in the fourth and final meeting between the clubs this season. Ed Jovanovski leads Phoenix with 1-2-3 in three games against Edmonton this season while Shane Doan leads all current Coyotes in career scoring vs. the Oilers with 10-34-44 in 45 games. The Coyotes, who are 2-1-1 in their last four games overall and 3-2-1 in their last six home games, are coming off a 6-2 loss to Anaheim on Sunday in a game that saw Doan finish with a goal and an assist to give him 3-4-7 in the last four games while Petr Prucha recorded his first goal as a member of the Coyotes. Following tonight's game, the Coyotes will travel to San Jose to face the Sharks on Saturday.

TONIGHT'S TOP STORYLINES:

Shane Doan was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week last week after recording seven points on three goals and four assists as the Coyotes earned five of a possible eight points, posting a 2-1-1 record in four games. He notched the game-winning goal and three assists in a 4-3 victory over San Jose on March 17 for a season-high four points, then tallied the game-winning goal in a 5-1 victory over Vancouver on March 21. On March 22, Doan recorded one goal and one assist in a 6-2 loss to Anaheim.

Zbynek Michalek, who leads the NHL with 239 blocked shots, is on pace to lead the Coyotes in that category for the third time in four seasons. In his first three seasons with the club (2005-06 to 2007-08), Michalek averaged 152 blocked shots per season, a number it took him just 45 games to reach this season. Michalek is currently on pace to block 268 shots this year, which would be the second-highest single-season total since 2005-06 (Ottawa's Anton Volchenkov blocked 273 shots in 2006-07).

The Coyotes went 2-1-1 on a recent four-game homestand (March 14-21) to improve their home record to 19-14-3 on the season. During the four-game home stretch, Ilya Bryzgalov posted a 1.71 GAA and a .947 SV% as the Coyotes outscored their opponents 12-8 in the four games.

Petr Prucha notched his first goal in a Coyotes uniform at Anaheim on Sunday and has recorded one point in each of the last two games (1-1-2). In 10 games with Phoenix, Prucha has collected 1-4-5.

Goaltender Al Montoya was recalled from Phoenix's AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, on Monday. The sixth overall pick in the 2004 Entry Draft by the Rangers, Montoya was acquired by the Coyotes at last season's trade deadline. In 162 career AHL games, Montoya has a record of 87-51-4 with a 2.61 GAA and nine shutouts. Montoya has yet to appear in an NHL game.

DOAN MOVING UP THE CHARTS: Coyotes captain Shane Doan is in his 13th NHL season - all with the Jets/Coyotes - and ranks near the top of the club's all-time lists in several categories. The native of Halkirk, Alberta ranks 2nd in franchise history in games played (956) and 4th in points (614), assists (359) and goals (255). He is also the franchise's all-time leader in game-winning goals (43) and on Nov. 18 became just the third player in team history to play in 900 games.

LEADERS OF THE PACK: Through 74 games, Shane Doan leads the Coyotes in scoring with 28-36-64 while Ed Jovanovski leads all Coyotes defensemen in scoring with 7-24-31 and Mikkel Boedker ranks 1st among Coyotes rookies with 10-17-27 on the season. Matthew Lombardi holds the team-lead in plus/minus (+12) while Zbynek Michalek continues to lead the team and the NHL in blocked shots with 239.

RARE FEAT: Viktor Tikhonov had the rare distinction of being credited with a goal and a minor penalty at the exact same time in the team's March 21 win over Vancouver. During a delayed penalty, Tikhonov was the last Coyotes player to make contact with the puck before an errant pass was knocked into Vancouver's empty net. As a result, Tikhonov was credited with a goal and a hooking minor at 10:30 of the second period. Since 1989-90, there have been only three other instances where a player was credited with an unassisted, empty net goal and a penalty at the same time.

DOAN WAS GREAT IN '08: Shane Doan completed the most productive calendar year of his career in 2008 after recording 86 points (36 goals, 50 assists) in 81 games during 2008. Only Evgeni Malkin (124 points), Alex Ovechkin (113), Joe Thornton (94), Jarome Iginla (90) and Pavel Datsyuk (89) registered more points than Doan during the 2008 calendar year. As a team, the Coyotes compiled a 38-34-11 record for the 2008 calendar year.

SHOT BLOCKERS: Zbynek Michalek continues to lead the NHL in blocked shots with 239 on the season. As a team, the Coyotes are 12-1-1 when blocking 20 or more shots in a game this season. DOAN'S MILESTONES: Shane Doan scored his 22nd goal of the season and 249th of his career on Feb. 14 against Calgary, moving him into sole possession of 4th place on the franchise's all-time goals list. Already this season, Doan has become the Coyotes/Jets organization's all-time leader in game-winning goals (42), has taken sole possession of second place on the franchise's all-time games played list, and has become the fourth Coyote/Jet to surpass 600 points.

AN ALL-STAR STAFF: Six members of the Coyotes' coaching staff and front office have combined for 30 All-Star Game appearances, five All-Star Game MVP awards and one coaching appearance. Head Coach Wayne Gretzky, who appeared in 18 All-Star Games and holds the NHL record for most career All-Star points (13-12-25) was named MVP in 1983, 1989 and 1999. General Manager Don Maloney appeared in two All-Star Games during his career and was the MVP of the 1984 Game after recording a goal and three assists. Goaltending Coach Grant Fuhr played in six All-Star Games and stopped all 15 shots he faced en route to being named MVP of the 1986 contest. Fuhr is one of just five goaltenders to win the award in its 41-year history. In addition, Director of Prospect Development Sean Burke appeared in three All-Star Games during his career, Head European Scout Christian Ruuttu played in one, and Senior Advisor to Hockey Operations John Muckler coached the Campbell Conference in the 1991 All-Star Game.

PROSPECTS IN WJC: Coyotes prospects Vladimir Ruzicka (4th round, 103rd overall in 2007) and Maxim Goncharov (5th round, 123rd overall in 2007) both participated in the 2009 World Junior Championships in Ottawa, ON. Ruzicka represented the Czech Republic while Goncharov played for Russia and captured a silver medal.

19 WILL GET YOU 20: Shane Doan has joined Dale Hawerchuk (1981-90) and Keith Tkachuk (1992-01) as the only players in franchise history to record nine consecutive 20-goal seasons. Doan's run of consecutive 20-goal campaigns began in 1999-2000.

RUSSIAN PROSPECT IMPRESSING: Coyotes prospect Maxim Goncharov, selected by the team in the 5th round (123rd overall) of the 2007 Entry Draft, was recently named the top prospect in the Russian League by NHL Central Scouting-Europe. The 19-year-old defenseman is described by Central Scouting as a “strong, mobile skater who likes to join the offensive rush… plays with grit and is strong along the boards.” Now in his second season with CSKA, Goncharov has recorded 7-7-14 and 50 PIM with a +5 rating in 46 games this year and represented Russia at the 2009 World Junior Championships.

HALE LIGHTS THE LAMP: David Hale scored his first NHL goal in Phoenix's Nov. 26 win over Columbus in his 231st career game, making him the player with the most games to begin a career before scoring his first goal since the NHL expanded in 1979-80. He scored his second career goal on Jan. 17 against his former team, the Calgary Flames.

DOAN SETS GWG RECORD: By scoring the game-winning goal in the Coyotes' Oct. 30 win over Pittsburgh, Shane Doan became the Jets/Coyotes franchise's all-time leader in game-winning goals with 41. He entered the season tied with Keith Tkachuk for the all-time lead at 40 GWGs after scoring five of them last season.

ANOTHER NIGHT OF FIRSTS: Three of the Coyotes' four rookies collected NHL "firsts" in Phoenix's Oct. 30 win over Pittsburgh: Kevin Porter scored his first NHL goal, Viktor Tikhonov recorded his first NHL point/assist, and Mikkel Boedker collected his first NHL assist.

ROOKIE POINT STREAK: By recording at least one point in each of the Coyotes' first three games this season, Kyle Turris tied the second-longest point streak by a rookie to begin a season in franchise history. Teemu Selanne registered a five-game point streak (5-4-9) to begin the 1992-93 season while Hannu Jarvenpaa began the 1987-88 campaign with a three-game point streak (2-2-4). Turris recorded 1-3-4 during the first three games.

LOTS OF ‘FIRSTS’: During the first two games of the season, several Coyotes achieved career firsts. Kyle Turris, who made his NHL debut last season, registered his first career goal and first career multi-point game against Anaheim on Oct. 12. That same game, Mikkel Boedker notched his first NHL goal. Kevin Porter collected his first career assist on Oct. 11 and added another the following day. The Coyotes’ fourth rookie, Viktor Tikhonov, joined Boedker and Porter in making his NHL debut in their season-opening win over Columbus on Oct. 11.

FIRST ROUNDERS: The Coyotes’ roster features the team’s top pick from each of the last four Entry Drafts: Mikkel Boedker (8th overall, 2008), Kyle Turris (3rd overall, 2007), Peter Mueller (8th overall, 2006) and Martin Hanzal (17th overall, 2005). Rookie Viktor Tikhonov was also a first round selection (28th overall) in 2008. In total, there are 10 former first round draft picks on the Coyotes’ roster. In addition to those five players, Shane Doan (7th overall by Winnipeg, 1995), David Hale (22nd overall by New Jersey, 2000), Dmitri Kalinin (18th overall by Buffalo, 1998), Ed Jovanovski (1st overall by Florida, 1995) and Scottie Upshall (6th overall by Nashville, 2002) were all first round selections.

BAR SET HIGH FOR ROOKIE CLASS: This is the second straight year the Coyotes have opened the season with four rookies on the roster. Last year’s season-opening rookie class consisted of Peter Mueller, Martin Hanzal, Daniel Carcillo and Daniel Winnik. The Coyotes went on to lead the NHL in goals scored by rookies with 63 (Mueller – 22, Carcillo – 13, Winnik – 11, Hanzal – 8, Keith Yandle – 5, Enver Lisin – 4).

COYOTES DEBUTS: Seven different players appeared in their first game as a Coyote on Oct. 11 in the team's season-opening win over Columbus and three of them recorded at least one point. Olli Jokinen, Kurt Sauer, David Hale, Todd Fedoruk and rookies Mikkel Boedker, Kevin Porter and Viktor Tikhonov all made their Coyotes debuts. Brian McGrattan made his Coyotes debut on Oct. 23, Ken Klee played his first game in a Coyotes uniform on Oct. 28 and Garth Murray debuted as a Coyotes on Nov. 4. In addition, Joakim Lindstrom played his first game for Phoenix on Dec. 10, Steven Goertzen debuted on Jan. 15, David Schlemko played his first NHL game on Feb. 4 and Jeff Hoggan appeared in his first game as a Coyote and 100th NHL game on Feb. 4. On March 5, Nigel Dawes, Dmitri Kalinin, Matthew Lombardi Petr Prucha and Scottie Upshall made their team debuts whil Josh Tordjman made his on Mar. 8 and Brandon Prust played his first game for Phoenix on Mar. 10.
