4/2/09 - St. Louis Blues 5, Detroit Red Wings 4

    PP: 1-5 PK: 3-4 SOG: 38 SA: 33 Three Stars: 1) David Backes-STL 2) Nicklas Lidstrom-DET 3) Brad Boyes-STL

DETROIT (AP) -David Backes had a lot easier time scoring four goals for the surging St. Louis Blues than he did trying to explain his big night. "I don't know what happened. One of those games where you kind of black out and then they're patting you on the back," Backes said after the Blues' 5-4 victory over the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. "It's awesome. I don't know what to attribute it to. Maybe a little sickness and a good pregame nap." The 6-foot-3, 220-pound winger broke a 4-4 tie with 4:07 left with his 30th goal of the season, scoring on a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle. Backes scored just 36 seconds after Detroit's Niklas Kronwall tied it. "We felt that David had the potential to be a 30-goal scorer," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "But we didn't think it would happen here in Detroit." Andy McDonald also scored, and Chris Mason made 34 saves to help the Blues jump from ninth to eighth in the Western Conference playoff race. The Blues are a point behind seventh-place Anaheim and one ahead of ninth-place Nashville. "We just battled in the third period," Mason said. "It was back and forth and we got the two points." St. Louis rebounded from a 3-1 loss in Chicago on Wednesday night that snapped its winning streak at five games. "We showed a lot of perseverance," Backes said. "Every time we got the lead, they tied it up. We got some great games defensively, guys blocked a lot of shots. Chris Mason made some great saves." Kronwall and Nicklas Lidstrom each had a goal and two assists and Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen both had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which lost its third straight and fourth in five games. Ty Conklin stopped 28 shots. "Obviously, the job I'm doing here, the team is not ready," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "So, myself and the leadership group here, as a group of individuals, we've got to do better than this. This is unacceptable."

    3/29/09 - Nashville Predators 4, Detroit Red Wings 3

    PP: 1-4 PK: 1-3 SOG: 36 SA: 26 Three Stars: 1) Steve Sullivan-NSH 2) Pekka Rinne-NSH 3) Pavel Datsyuk-DET

DETROIT (AP) -The Nashville Predators capped a big week with a confidence-building victory over the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. Ryan Suter broke a tie on a power play with 4:36 left, and Pekka Rinne made 33 saves to help Nashville win its third straight, 4-3 over Detroit on Sunday night. Not only did the Predators defeat the defending Stanley Cup champs, who are also second in the Western Conference, they also beat the conference's top team, the San Jose Sharks, on Thursday night, and Los Angeles on Saturday night in overtime. "This crew deserves a lot of credit for this week," coach Barry Trotz said. It also was Nashville's fourth game in six days. Steve Sullivan had a goal and an assist and Joel Ward, Jerred Smithson also scored for the Predators, seventh in the Western Conference playoff race with six games remaining. "We're in the fight of our lives for the playoffs," Sullivan said. "We've still got a lot of work to do." Henrik Zetterberg, Mikael Samuelsson and Johan Franzen scored for Detroit, which lost is second straight and third in four games. Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom each had two assists, and Chris Osgood stopped 22 shots. "The bottom line is we got to find ways to win games and we're in it together," Osgood said. Suter beat him with a slap shot from the top of the left circle for his seventh goal, just 29 seconds after Chris Chelios took a cross-checking penalty. Sullivan made the play as he took the puck off the left boards inside the blue line and headed into the middle of the ice, but he then passed it back to Suter at the left point, who moved in and blasted a shot high on the far side. "Sully made a great play coming off the wall," Suter said. "I thought he was going to go to the other point. But he passed it back to me. I moved in and was looking for someone to pass to. I saw Bonkie (Radek Bonk) in front of the net and then I just tried to go far side." Franzen tied it at 3 with 5:25 left with a wrist shot from the high slot for his 32nd goal. Goals by Ward and Smithson 20 seconds apart gave Nashville a 3-2 lead. Ward tied it at 2, putting in a rebound for his 17th goal with 8:25 left in the third period. Smithson took a pass from Cal O'Reilly and beat Osgood from the bottom of the left circle. It was Smithson's fourth goal. "A point shot. I went to the net to try and create a traffic," Ward said. " And I was able to chip the rebound in." Both goals were the result of Detroit turnovers. The first came when Jonathan Ericsson and Tomas Kopecky almost collided in the neutral zone. "We actually checked our own guy in the neutral zone on the one," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We found a way to lose the game. That drives you crazy, especially this time of year. It's the time of year you want to be ramping it up." Samuelsson's power-play goal gave Detroit a 2-1 lead with 4:47 left in the second period. It came with the Red Wings holding a two-man advantage. Samuelsson put in a one-time shot from the left circle for his 19th goal. Sullivan opened the scoring with a power-play goal 2:25 into the game for his 10th goal. Zetterberg tied it with his 30th goal, a short-handed effort at 4:29. "I thought we were gassed after the first period," Trotz said. "But the guys just sucked it up." Notes: Detroit D Brian Rafalski missed the game because of a sore groin. ... Nashville was without captain and C Jason Arnott (concussion), C David Legwand (cheekbone), D Wade Belak (lower body) and LW Ryan Jones (upper body). ... An apparent goal Franzen with 1:15 left in the first was reversed because it was ruled the he kicked it in. ... Predators' RW Martin Erat was helped off the ice after getting hit in the left leg by teammate Shea Weber's slap shot a little less than 1:30 into the second period and didn't return. Trotz said Erat likely had a fractured leg and would be out for at least four weeks. ... Zetterberg's goal was his 400th career point.

3/27/09 - New York Islanders 2, Detroit Red Wings 0

    PP: 0-6 PK: 3-3 SOG: 42 SA: 30 Three Stars: 1) Joey MacDonald-NYI 2) Kyle Okposo-NYI 3) Josh Bailey-NYI

DETROIT (AP) -Joey MacDonald made himself right at home at Joe Louis Arena. The former Detroit goalie made 42 saves for his first NHL shutout, and Frans Nielsen and Josh Bailey scored goals in the lowly New York Islanders' 2-0 victory over the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings on Friday night. New York, which broke a three-game losing streak, has the worst record in the NHL, while Detroit is tied with San Jose for the league lead. MacDonald, making his 62nd appearance in an NHL career that began with Detroit in 2006-07, made 14 saves in the second period and 19 in the third. He became the first Islanders goalie to shut out Detroit since Billy Smith on Jan. 22, 1981. "It's pretty exciting," said MacDonald, making his first appearance since March 10. "No better thing than to get your first shutout in the building of the team you used to play for." Marian Hossa, Valtteri Filppula and Pavel Datsyuk all hit posts or crossbars for Detroit. "We got lucky. We got some lucky bounces," Islanders' defenseman Bruno Gervais said. "They hit a lot of posts." New York scored both of its goals in the second period. Nielsen opened the scoring with a short-handed goal 8:41 into the period. After taking a pass from Kyle Okposo, Nielsen cut in off the right wing, made a move and beat Chris Osgood for his seventh goal of the season. Bailey scored his sixth goal with 4:51 left in the period, putting a rebound into an open net after beating Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg out of the corner. Bailey praised MacDonald. "That was one of the best games by a goalie I've ever seen," he said. "He won the game for us." In addition to the posts and crossbars, MacDonald foiled Mikael Samuelsson when he reached back for a glove save at the goal line when Samuelsson appeared to have an open net from the bottom of the right circle during a Red Wing power play 6:37 into the second period. "Sammy missed the empty net," MacDonald said. "I just stuck my glove out and caught it." Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said his team had its chances. "Time and time again we had great opportunities, I thought our execution was really good, but I thought they were desperate," Babcock said. "The goalie was good, they blocked shots, they competed really hard." Osgood finished with 28 saves. "Early on we didn't play as well as we had to against a team that played loose, played with confidence," Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "We didn't get skating until later in the game, and we were down 2-0 at the time." Notes: Lidstrom and Zetterberg were both minus-2. ... New York LW Sean Bergenheim missed his seventh game because of a strained groin. ... The Red Wings have 49 victories, one away from becoming the third team in NHL history to win 50 games in four consecutive seasons. ... Bailey played junior hockey for the Ontario Hockey League's nearby Windsor Spitfires.

    Detroit Red Wings Notes
    TEAM NOTES

    A WINNING TRADITION IN HOCKEYTOWN
  • Since the beginning of the 1996-97 season, the Detroit Red Wings have won more games (621) than any other franchise in the National Hockey League. Detroit's 542 regular season wins and 79 playoff victories are both tops in the NHL over the past 11+ seasons.
  • The Red Wings have won eight consecutive Central Division titles (2001-2009) and 12 out of the last 15. In two of the three seasons the Wings did not win the Central Division, the team went on to win the Stanley Cup (1997 & 1998).
  • Dating back to the 1999-2000 campaign the Red Wings have recorded an NHL record nine consecutive 100-point seasons, eclipsing the old NHL record of eight held by the Montreal Canadiens (1974-75 through 1981-82).
  • The Detroit Red Wings captured the 2008 Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's regular season champion. It was Detroit's sixth Presidents' Trophy in the last 13 years (1995, 1996, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008). No other team has won the award more than twice since it was introduced at the start of the 1985-86 season by the NHL's Board of Governors. Detroit also tied the Buffalo Sabres for the best overall record in 2007, but Buffalo took home the trophy on a tie-breaker.
  • The Detroit Red Wings topped the 50-win plateau for the third consecutive season in 2007-08, and the fifth time in franchise history. Detroit finished with a 54-21-7 record, good for 115 points. In 2005-06, The Red Wings finished 58-16-8 (124 points) and in 2006-07 they posted a record of 50-19-13 (113 points). This marks only the fourth time in NHL history that a team has won 50 or more games in three consecutive seasons. Montreal was the last to accomplish the feat in four consecutive season from 1975-76 through 1978-79.
  • The Detroit Red Wings qualified for the postseason for the 18th consecutive season in 2008-09 - the longest current streak in professional sports.
  • With their victory over the Edmonton Oilers on 3/24, the Red Wings have now quailified as a top-4 seed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 17 consecutive seasons.
