OILERS HOST DALLAS IN OPENING GAME OF FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND
- The Edmonton Oilers (17-16-3) begin the New Year by hosting the Dallas Stars (16-15-5) tonight at Rexall Place in the first game of a five-game homestand.
- The five-game homestand will see the Oilers host Dallas tonight, NY Islanders (Dec. 5), Vancouver (Dec. 7), San Jose (Dec. 9) and St. Louis (Dec. 11).
- The Oilers bring a two-game losing streak into tonight's game as they are 0-2-0 from Dec. 30-31. The losing streak has seen the Oilers lose both ends of back-to-back games, falling 3-2 vs Ottawa (Dec. 30) and 6-4 at Calgary (Dec. 31).
- The Oilers last homestand saw them compile a 1-1-0 record following a 5-2 win vs Nashville (Dec. 28) and a 3-2 loss vs Ottawa (Dec. 30).
- Tonight's game is the third of seven home games in an eight-game stretch for the Oilers between Dec. 28th and Jan. 11th. The Oilers are 1-1-0 after the first two games of the seven home games.
- The Oilers had a three-game winning streak ended with a 3-2 loss vs Ottawa (Dec. 30).

A CASE FOR THE DEFENCE
- Four of the Oilers top eight scorers are defencemen. Sheldon Souray leads the way with 11-15-26 in 35 games to rank him 2nd on the Oilers scoring list and he leads the team with his 11 goals and 7 PPG. Souray is7th in scoring among NHL defencemen, while he is 2nd in goals and tied for 1st in PPG.
- Souray is joined by Lubomir Visnovksy (4th on Oilers & tied for 14th in the NHL) with 6-17-23, Tom Gilbert (2-15-17) and Denis Grebeshkov (2-14-16).
- Souray had a career-high three-game goal scoring streak ended in the Oilers 3-2 loss vs Ottawa (Dec. 30). He scored 3-0-3 from Dec. 22-28. He scored the GWG in back-to-back games vs Phoenix (Dec. 22) and at Vancouver (Dec. 26) before opening the scoring with a PPG for Edmonton vs Nashville (Dec. 28).
- Visnovsky leads the Oilers with nine multiple point games, registering his ninth with two assist vs Nashville (Dec. 28). He registered three consecutive multiple point games from Dec. 22-28.
- Visnovsky had a four game scorng streak (0-7-7; Dec. 19-28) ended in a 3-2 loss vs Ottawa (Dec. 30), but returned to the scoresheet with a goal at Calgary (Dec. 31). He has scored points (1-7-8) in five of Edmonton's last six games (Dec. 19-31).
- Visnovsky's first assist vs Nashivlle (Dec. 28) was his 300th career NHL point.
- Grebeshkov was involved in all four of the Oilers goals in a 6-4 loss at Calgary (Dec. 31). He scored 1-3-4 to register single-game career-highs in both points and assists.

OF NOTE
- Erik Cole and Sam Gagner have registered multiple point games in two of the Oilers last three games (Dec. 28-31). Cole scored a season-high 1-2-3 in the 5-2 win vs Nashville (Dec. 28) for his first multiple point game of the season and then netted 1-1-2 in the 6-4 loss at Calgary (Dec. 31). Gagner scored 1-1-2 vs Nashville and had two assists at Calgary (0-2-2).
- Gilbert Brule, who was recalled from the Oilers AHL affiliate in Springfield on Dec. 31st, celebrated his 22nd birthday on New Year's Day. Brule was born in Edmonton on January 1, 1987.
- The Oilers have four players with 10-or-more goals this season. Sheldon Souray leads the Oilers, and is 2nd among NHL defencemen, with 11 goals, while Ales Hemsky, Shawn Horcoff and Andrew Cogliano each have 10 goals.
- Shawn Horcoff had his three-game scoring streak (2-2-4 from Dec. 26-30) ended at Calgary (Dec. 31).
- Dwayne Roloson played his 150th career Oilers game at Calgary (Dec. 31). He is 6th on Edmonton's career list for games played by a goaltender.
- Roloson needs two wins for his 150th career NHL victory. He has a career NHL record of 148-180-61 in 419 NHL games.
- Roloson started five consecutive games for the Oilers and was 3-1-1 from Dec. 17-28. Since November 15th, Roloson has appeared in 15 of 20 games, starting 13 of the games. He is 7-4-2 in his 13 starts and has allowed two-or-less goals in 10 of the 13 starts.
- Ales Hemsky scored his 300th career point with two PPA in the Oilers 3-2 win at Vancouver on Dec. 26. Hemsky's second assist of the game came on Sheldon Souray's GWG and gives him 80-220-300 in 382 career games. He is the 15th player in Oilers history to score 300-or-more career points.
- Ales Hemsky is tied for 3rd in NHL powerplay scoring with 2-17-19. His 17 PPA are tied with Sidney Crosby and Ryan Getzlaf for 1st in the NHL. Hemsky has been involved in 19 of the Oilers 31 PPG (61.3%) this season.
- Marc Pouliot had his career-high three-game scoring streak ended vs Nashville (Dec. 28). He scored 2-1-3 from Dec. 19-26 and has scored points (3-1-4) in four of his last six games (Dec. 16-28).

LAST GAME: December 31 at Calgary (L. 6-4)
The Oilers could not hold onto three one-goal leads and fell 6-4 at Calgary on New Year's Eve. Jarome Iginla and Mike Cammalleri each scored five points with two goals and three assists to lead the Flames to the win. Oilers defenceman Denis Grebeshkov was involved in all four Edmonton goals as he scored 1-3-4 to establish single-game career-highs in both points and assists. The four point game is the most points scored by an Oiler this season. Joining Grebeshkov on the scoreboard for the Oilers were Robert Nilsson (PPG), Lubomir Visnovsky and Erik Cole. Cole also added an assist to finish the game with 1-1-2, giving him two multiple point games in his last three games (2-3-5; Dec. 28-31). Sam Gagner also has two multiple point games in his last three outings as he scored two assists versus the Flames and had 1-1-2 vs Nashville (Dec. 28). Grebeshkov gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season only 87 seconds after the opening face-off, but Iginla tied the game at 3:53 with his first of two goals. Edmonton would take 2-1 and 3-2 leads but could not build on the lead and the Flames rallied to tie the score each time. The Flames outscored the Oilers 3-1 in the third period to seal the victory.

- Shawn Horcoff became the 18th player in Oilers history to play 500-or-more games with Edmonton when he skated vs Detroit on November 20th.
- Horcoff is in his 8th season with the Oilers since joining Edmonton in 2000-01 & is 18th on Edmonton's all-time list.
- Oilers captain Ethan Moreau played in his 533rd career Oilers game vs Nashville (Dec. 28/08) to move past Paul Coffey into 15th place on Edmonton's all-time list.

PENNER'S CONSECUTIVE GAMES PLAYED STREAK ENDS AT 180 GAMES
Oilers right winger Dustin Penner had his consecutive games played streak come to an end when he was a healthy scratch in Edmonton's 3-2 shootout loss vs Colorado on Nov. 15. Penner, extended the streak to 180 games by playing in the season's first 16 games (Oct. 12-Nov. 13). Now in his second season with the Oilers, Penner played all 82 with Edmonton in 2007-08 and the complete 2006-07 regular season schedule with Anaheim.
