LAST GAME: January 18 vs Phoenix (W. 6-3)
Ethan Moreau scored three times to register his first career NHL hat trick and Ales Hemsky marked his return to the lineup with two goals as the Oilers opened a two-game homestand with a 6-3 win over the visiting Coyotes. Prior to the game, the Oilers honoured former Edmonton great Glenn Anderson by retiring his number nine to the Rexall Place rafters. After surrendering the game's first goal to the Coyotes Keith Yandle, the Oilers scored three times as Moreau netted his first two goals and Hemsky scored once. It took Hemsky only 11:53 to register his first point since returning to the lineup after missing 10 games (Dec. 30-Jan. 16) with a concussion suffered vs Nashville on Dec. 28). Daniel Carcillo and Peter Mueller would tie the game for the Coyotes before the midway point of the second stanza, but Dustin Penner restored the Edmonton lead with his 11th goal at 12:01. Hemsky would make it 5-3 with his second goal of the game at 18:23 of the third period and Moreau rounded out the scoring by completing his hat trick into an empty net with only 0.4 seconds remaining. It was the Oilers second hat trick in the last four games (Jan. 13-18) as Erik Cole netted the Oilers first of the season with three goals in Edmonton's 5-2 win at Washington (Jan. 13). Andrew Cogliano had a career-high three assists, while defencemen Steve Staios and Tom Gilbert each had two helpers. The win opened a two-game homestand for the Oilers and extended the team's winning streak to two games (2-0-0; Jan. 16-18) and its home ice winning streak to two games (2-0-0: Jan. 11-18).
