LAST MEETING: The Kings, who trailed 3-0 entering the second period, scored four times in the middle frame and eventually skated away with a point, as the Edmonton Oilers eked out a 5-4 shootout win, before 14,920 at STAPLES Center, Friday, Dec. 5. KIPRUSOFF STYMIES KINGS ATTACK IN 2-0 SHUTOUT
The Kings out-shot the Flames 36-20, but Miikka Kiprusoff stopped them all en route to Calgary’s 2-0 shutout win, before 17,286 at STAPLES Center, Thursday, Feb. 12. After Kiprusoff stoned a few grade-A Kings opportunities to begin the game, Mike Cammalleri got the Flames on the board with a power-play goal at 8:58 of the first. Kiprusoff, who earned his 30th career shutout, held the fort from there and Rene Bourque sealed it with a late empty-netter.
KINGS TAKE FOURTH STRAIGHT WITH SHOOTOUT WIN ON THE ISLAND
Jack Johnson scored the lone goal in the shootout, giving the Kings a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders, before 12,330 at the Nassau Coliseum, Tuesday, Feb. 10. Wayne Simmonds gave the Kings an early 1-0 lead 2:08 into the game, before the Islanders answered with two straight to go ahead 2-1. Anze Kopitar tied it 5:27 into the second, but the Isles regained the lead at 9:50 of the middle frame. Alexander Frolov re-tied it 6:41 into the third and that’s how the game stayed going into the shootout. Jonathan Quick (22 saves in regulation and overtime) stopped all three New York shooters. Yann Danis (36 saves in regulation and overtime) stopped two of three.
KINGS KEEP IT ROLLING IN JERSEY
The Kings scored three unanswered goals in the second period and Jonathan Quick stopped 25 of 26 shots, leading the Kings to a 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils, before 17,056 at the Prudential Center, Saturday, Feb. 7. Jarret Stoll opened the scoring 10:23 into the second followed by an Anze Kopitar tally two minutes later. Patrick O’Sullivan scored on a penalty shot at the 14:37 mark to give Los Angeles a three-goal lead. The only Devil to beat Quick was Dainius Zubrus midway through the third period.
KINGS HOLD ON IN WASHINGTON FOR ANOTHER WIN
Anze Kopitar had three points (2-1=3) and Jonathan Quick made a career high 41 saves, leading the Kings to a 5-4 victory, before 18,277 at the Verizon Center, Thursday, Feb. 5. The Caps scored 15 seconds into the game, but the Kings came back to score three straight (two by Kopitar and a short-hander by Michal Handzus) to go up 3-1. Washington cut it to within one, but Patrick O’Sullivan’s goal at the 7:26 mark of the second period gave the Kings a 4-2 lead. Kyle Calder scored what proved to be the game-winner 18:27 into the third, as the Capitals scored with the extra attacker at 18:54.
QUICK BLANKS SENS 1-0
Jonathan Quick stopped all 29 shots and earned his third career shutout, as the Kings blanked the Ottawa Senators 1-0, before 18,054 at Scotiabank Place Tuesday, Feb. 3. Michal Handzus scored the game’s lone goal at the 17:21 mark of the third period. Ottawa netminder Brian Elliott was also sharp in net, stopping 25 of 26 shots. It was the Kings’ second straight shutout over the Senators, the other coming March 6, 2008. The last time the Senators scored against the Kings was Dec. 2, 2005.

PLAYER NOTES:
KINGS CALDER CANDIDATES: The Kings boast two of the NHL’s best rookies with defenseman Drew Doughty and goaltender Jonathan Quick (see numbers below). The Kings have had one Calder Trophy recipient in club history (Luc Robitaille in 1986-97).
DOUGHTY DOING IT WELL: Drew Doughty, the second overall pick in last summer’s draft, leads all rookies (and the Kings) with 23:43 average time-on-ice. He has played at least 20 minutes in 48 of 52 games this season (25-plus minutes in 22 games and a season-high 29:04 Nov. 22 vs. Colorado). Doughty has 15 points this season (3-12=15), tied for second most among rookie blue-liners. He’s first among rookies with 71 blocked shots.
QUICK GETS NO. 1 STAR OF THE WEEK: Jonathan Quick was named the NHL First Star of the Week (ending Feb. 8) after posting a 3-0-0 record with a 1.67 goals-against average, .950 save percentage and one shutout in three games last week. Among NHL rookie goaltenders Quick ranks second with a 2.33 GAA, third with 11 wins and second with a .920 save percentage. SALUTE TO HEROES: Throughout the 2008-09 season, the Kings would like to salute heroes within our community. With special ticket packages for each Salute to Heroes game, Kings fans can help honor those recognized as giving back to their communities in their own ways. The Kings will next salute Firefighters on Feb. 14; Military on Feb. 21; Environmental Protectors on March 16; Nominated local heroes by fans on April 4. TIP-A-KING: Come to the leading entertainment destination for all of Los Angeles and the new event capital of the world – L.A. LIVE - at Tip-A-King 2009 Presented By D.I.S.C. Sports & Spine Center in Marina del Rey, the official medical center for the Los Angeles Kings. Scheduled for Sunday, February 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the recently opened L.A. LIVE, Kings players, coaches and broadcasters will be on hand to receive a $1 “tip” for an autograph and/or a $2 “tip” for a photograph from their fans. All proceeds benefit the Kings Care Foundation, the club’s award-winning non-profit organization that provides educational and recreational opportunities for children throughout Greater Los Angeles. Tip-A-King Presented By D.I.S.C. Sports & Spine Center in Marina del Rey is the single largest fundraiser for the Kings Care Foundation. Each year the entire Los Angeles Kings Hockey Club and their fans join together for this fun-filled celebration, which for more than 17 years has raised more than $2 million for local children’s charities.
