3/23/09 -Calgary Flames 5, Detroit Red Wings3

PP: 0-1 PK: 3-4 SOG: 33 SA: 27 Three Stars: 1) Mike Cammalleri-CGY 2) Pavel Datsyuk-DET 3) Jamie Lundmark-CGY

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -It was a forgettable night for Chris Osgood. Mike Cammalleri scored a goal and added two assists as the Calgary Flames took advantage of the shaky Osgood and beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-3 on Monday night. Osgood had been in net for each of Detroit's victories in a four-game winning streak. However, he made an early exit and starting a fifth straight game for the first time this season. He was pulled after allowing three goals on 14 shots. "By far that was my worst game in this building," said Osgood, who was pulled by coach Mike Babcock 6 minutes into the second period. "It wasn't that I didn't feel good, I love playing in Calgary, I always feel good here, but it just didn't happen for me tonight." The only goal of the first period came at 10:57 when Dion Phaneuf scored his 11th goal on Calgary's second shot. Phaneuf's harmless-looking snap shot from just over the blue line beat Osgood on his glove side. Jamie Lundmark, Curtis Glencross and Craig Conroy, into an empty net, also scored for Calgary. Detroit rallied in the final 10 minutes behind goals from Johan Franzen and Jiri Hudler to get within 4-3. Pavel Datsyuk added his 30th goal for the Red Wings. Lundmark wristed a shot from deep in the corner toward the net that glanced off Osgood's pad and trickled underneath him to make it 2-0 at 2:21. The crowd immediately serenaded Osgood with derisive chants of "Os-good, Os-good." About three minutes later, Cammalleri skated behind the net and banked in a puck off Osgood's pad for his 36th. Osgood was then replaced with Ty Conklin. Having surrendered three goals on 14 shots, Osgood went straight to the dressing room and didn't return for the remainder of the game. Osgood dismissed the bad outing, saying he had "zero" concern about it even though it came only three weeks before the playoffs. "I don't think about it when I play great, you just move on and play the next game," Osgood said. "You guys make too big deal out of these games. If this happens the day before the playoffs, it doesn't matter. What matters is what happens in the first playoff game." Babcock also shrugged it off as just one of those nights. "If you didn't have such good history and if you didn't believe in him, you might think like that but that's not how I look at it at all," Babcock said. "He had a tough night, but in saying that he won us the Cup last year. He was great for us. "We don't need him to be first star, we just need him to be regular and he's very capable of doing that." The Flames opened up a five-point lead on the idle Vancouver Canucks atop the Northwest Division. "Now it's crunch time. We want to just keep winning our games and let these games dwindle down and try to win the division," Conroy said. "Noboby's been hotter than Vancouver and we know that but we felt this was a must game, we didn't want to give them another opportunity like we did against St. Louis." On a night that Osgood had no luck, Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff appeared to have plenty of it. Kiprusoff made 30 saves, including 14 in the third period. "Something we were trying to do was get the puck on net a lot and try and cause some havoc in front of the net," Cammalleri said. "We got some bounces that went our way so it was nice." Mikael Samuelsson had a breakaway in the second period, and after getting around a sprawled Kiprusoff, his shot hit the post, hit Kiprusoff in the leg, hit the post again, and slid along the line before being cleared by Cory Sarich. In the third period, a point shot from Niklas Kronwall smashed off the end boards and ricocheted off the back of Kiprusoff's outstretched pad before being covered. "You've got to have some bounces like that if you're going to win a hockey game," Sarich said. "We weren't great in the third. It was a learning experience against a great club. I think we tightened up a little bit. We're going to have to find a way to take some momentum away from them and get it on our side." After Glencross' one-timer at 5:31 of the third put Calgary ahead 4-1, Franzen started the Red Wings rally with his 31st goal at 10:22. Hudler made it 4-3 with 6:57 left. Conroy clinched Calgary's win with 28 seconds remaining. The Red Wings outshot Calgary 33-27 overall, 16-9 in the third period. Notes: Daymond Langkow's assist on Phaneuf's goal was his 600th NHL point. ... Calgary RW David Van der Gulik was in the lineup after being recalled earlier Monday from Quad Cities (AHL). It was the third time in less than a month he was summoned from the minors. ... Calgary RW David Moss was awarded the 2008-09 Ralph T. Scurfield Humanitarian Award, which goes to the Flames player who exemplifies determination and leadership along with dedication to community service. ... Detroit is one of five NHL teams without a hat trick this season.

3/20/09 - Detroit Red Wings 6, Atlanta Thrashers 3

PP: 1-4 PK: 4-6 SOG: 38 SA: 34 Three Stars: 1) Henrik Zetterberg-DET 2) Johan Franzen-DET 3) Vyacheslav Kozlov-ATL

ATLANTA (AP) -Compared to the reception he had in Pittsburgh, Marian Hossa enjoyed his return to Atlanta. "It was kind of mixed in the crowd, more favorable than Pittsburgh," Hossa said. "Obviously, we played a pretty good game until the end. We allowed a few extra goals in the net." Former Atlanta star Hossa scored his 36th goal, and Johan Franzen had a goal and two assists to help the Detroit Red Wings win their fourth straight, 6-3 over the Thrashers on Friday night. Playing his first game in Atlanta since the Thrashers traded him last year to the Penguins, Hossa was booed by maybe half of the capacity crowd at Philips Arena. The building, however, was about half-full of Detroit fans for the defending Stanley Cup champion's first visit to Georgia since Dec. 13, 2005. "I played lots of games on this rink," Hossa said. "It was a mix of cheers and boos. I'm enjoying the atmosphere. The fans were great. It's always good for every player to score against a former team." Chris Osgood stopped 31 shots to earn his fourth consecutive victory. The Red Wings, who lead the NHL with 105 points, have won five straight on the road to improve to 22-10-5 away from Joe Louis Arena. "Osgood made some great saves in the first period," Thrashers first-year coach John Anderson said. "Games change complexion when one team is down or us and if we had gotten up, it might have changed the way we played." Brian Rafalski, Pavel Datsyuk, Jiri Hudler and Daniel Cleary also scored for Detroit, and Henrik Zetterberg had a career-high four assists. Bryan Little, Colin Stuart and Slava Kozlov scored for Atlanta. "We had some chances in the first on the power play that we did not score on," said Kozlov, a former Red Wing. "They were very strong on the penalty kill. They dominated in both their zone and our zone tonight. Osgood was very strong for them tonight." The Thrashers have lost two straight after winning a franchise-best six straight. Goalie Kari Lehtonen lost for the first time in five starts. He made 32 saves. Franzen, who assisted on the first two goals, scored on a power play midway through the third. His 30th goal gave the Red Wings center 28 points in his last 32 games. "We played a solid game," Franzen said. "Overall, we did an OK job, but could have spent more time in their end. Things went our way." Arguably the best chance Atlanta had to stay within reach of the lead came 11:51 into the second when Ilya Kovalchuk's wrister from the left circle went under Osgood's pads but sailed just beyond the right goalpost. On the ensuing possession 13 seconds later, Pavel Datsyuk beat Lehtonen's stick side for his 29th goal and 2-0 lead. Franzen, who assisted on the first two goals, made it 3-0 about six minutes later. "I was really happy with Zetterberg," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "He had a real big night here. It was big for him, it was important." For Hossa, who was booed loudly and often when he returned to Pittsburgh earlier this season, appreciates playing for a team with so much offensive capacity. "It just shows how this team is special," Hossa said. "Not a lot of teams have four 30-goal scorers. It's nice to see lots of guys contribute by scoring goals. Every night it's somebody else taking up the slack. It's not always the same guys, which is huge for the team." Notes: Atlanta's frustration was evident with 2:17 remaining. D Garnet Exelby was assessed a 10-minute misconduct as he involved himself a fight between teammate Nathan Oystrick and Detroit's Mikael Samuelsson. ... Hudler's goal was his first in 15 games. ... Red Wings C Valtteri Filppula returned after missing two games with a sore back.

3/17/09 - Detroit Red Wings 3, Philadelphia Flyers 2

PP: 0-5 PK: 2-2 SOG: 48 SA: 26 Three Stars: 1) Pavel Datsyuk-DET 2) Henrik Zetterberg-DET 3) Scott Hartnell-PHI

DETROIT (AP) -The Detroit Red Wings' patience and hard work paid off. Johan Franzen and Henrik Zetterberg scored 1:32 apart in the third period to wipe out a one-goal deficit and rally Detroit to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night. Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist, and Franzen also had an assist for Detroit, which hasn't lost to Philadelphia at home since Nov. 4, 1988 (14-0-2). Chris Osgood made 24 saves. "In the end, we found a way," Zetterberg said. "We made their defense tired because we stayed in their end a long time. Eventually with patience and shooting the puck, the puck went in." Scott Hartnell had a goal and an assist, and Joffrey Lupul also scored for Philadelphia. Martin Biron stopped 45 shots. "We've got some work to do to catch up with them," Flyers coach John Stevens said. The Red Wings are the defending Stanley Cup champions and have the most points in the NHL this season. Philadelphia is tied for second in the Atlantic Division. Franzen made it 2-2 at 9:47 of the third period with his 29th goal. It was set up by Datsyuk, who got to a puck along the left wing boards and avoided defenseman Ryan Parent at the same time. Datsyuk then sent a cross-ice pass to Franzen, who put a shot over the sprawling Biron. "It was Pav all over the ice," Osgood said. "Making great plays, backchecking, stealing pucks." Zetterberg broke the tie with 8:41 left when he scored from the left circle, his 29th goal. "This game's fair. If you do things right and do them right longer, you tend to win more often," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "We made a mistake a couple times and they scored on their chances, but I thought it was fair. The team that stuck with it the longest got a win tonight." Philadelphia held a 2-1 lead after two periods. Lupul's 21st goal gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead 4:28 into the second period. He beat Osgood from the right circle with a snap shot. Datsyuk put the Red Wings on the board with 2:33 left in the second with his 28th goal, beating Biron high on the short side with a wrist shot from the outside edge of the left circle. "It was just a great shot," Biron said. "I didn't give him much, I didn't think I gave him much. It was just a great shot. "It's a different game if it's 2-0 after two." Philadelphia led 1-0 after the first period despite being outshot 19-8. Hartnell opened the scoring with 3:26 left when he took a long pass from Braydon Coburn for a partial breakaway and, while holding off Marian Hossa, beat Osgood. It was Hartnell's 26th goal. The Flyers had trailed after the first period in their previous 11 games. Notes: C Kris Draper played his 1,000th game for the Red Wings. He joins Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Steve Yzerman and current captain Nicklas Lidstrom as the only players to reach the mark with Detroit. ... Philadelphia C Jeff Carter played his 201st consecutive game. ... The Red Wings were without RW Tomas Holmstrom (strained knee) and C Valtteri Filppula (back spasms). ... Datsyuk stretched his point streak to six games (three goals and six assists). ... The teams last met on Feb. 12, 2007, a 6-1 Philadelphia home win.

Detroit Red Wings Notes
TEAM NOTES

A WINNING TRADITION IN HOCKEYTOWN
  • Since the beginning of the 1996-97 season, the Detroit Red Wings have won more games (620) than any other franchise in the National Hockey League. Detroit's 541 regular season wins and 79 playoff victories are both tops in the NHL over the past 11+ seasons.
  • The Red Wings have won seven consecutive Central Division titles (2001-2008) and 11 out of the last 14. In two of the three seasons the Wings did not win the Central Division, the team went on to win the Stanley Cup (1997 & 1998).
  • Dating back to the 1999-2000 campaign the Red Wings have recorded an NHL record nine consecutive 100-point seasons, eclipsing the old NHL record of eight held by the Montreal Canadiens (1974-75 through 1981-82).
  • The Detroit Red Wings captured the 2008 Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's regular season champion. It was Detroit's sixth Presidents' Trophy in the last 13 years (1995, 1996, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008). No other team has won the award more than twice since it was introduced at the start of the 1985-86 season by the NHL's Board of Governors. Detroit also tied the Buffalo Sabres for the best overall record in 2007, but Buffalo took home the trophy on a tie-breaker.
  • The Detroit Red Wings topped the 50-win plateau for the third consecutive season in 2007-08, and the fifth time in franchise history. Detroit finished with a 54-21-7 record, good for 115 points. In 2005-06, The Red Wings finished 58-16-8 (124 points) and in 2006-07 they posted a record of 50-19-13 (113 points). This marks only the fourth time in NHL history that a team has won 50 or more games in three consecutive seasons. Montreal was the last to accomplish the feat in four consecutive season from 1975-76 through 1978-79.
  • The Detroit Red Wings qualified for the postseason for the 18th consecutive season in 2008-09 - the longest current streak in professional sports.
  • Entering the 2008-09 season, Detroit has also quailified as a top-4 seed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 16 consecutive seasons.

We feel he is moving into the prime of his career and is another key to ensuring the long-term success of this franchise. We are thrilled that a player we have drafted and developed will play out his career in Detroit with this lifetime contract."
