THROW YOUR HATS IN THE AIR: James Neal's hat trick on Dec. 23 at Toronto was Dallas' fourth of the season, which trails only Pittsburgh (5) in the league in total hat tricks by a team. The most hat tricks in a season by a Dallas Stars club is five, in both 1997-98 and 2003-04, and the franchise record is held by the 1985-86 Minnesota North Stars (11). Loui Eriksson had his first career hat trick on Dec. 18 vs. Columbus, while Mark Parrish (Nov. 7 at Anaheim) and Fabian Brunnstom (Oct. 15 vs. Nashville) each did so in their debut with the Stars. The last player in the NHL prior to Parrish and Brunnstrom to earn a hat trick in his personal debut with a team was Steve Sullivan with Nashville on Feb. 14, 2004. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Dallas Stars are the first team in NHL history to have two players in one season score three goals in their first career game with a club.

ERIKSSON FEELING HOT: Loui Eriksson netted two goals on Dec. 31 vs. New Jersey, his 19th and 20th of the season, giving him markers in four of the last seven games (8-0-8) as well as five multiple-goal games in 2008-09. As of Jan. 2, Eriksson was second in the NHL in shooting percentage (27.0%), tied for second in even strength goals (17) and sixth in goals (20). Eriksson currently leads the Stars in goals, and ranks tied for second in game-winners (3), third in scoring (20-8-28) and tied for third in plus/minus (+5). With 20 goals through 36 games, Eriksson has surpassed his previous career-high of 14 goals (set in 69 games last season) and is on a pace for 46 goals this season.
Eriksson was named the NHL's First Star of the Week on Dec. 22 after scoring six goals in three games (6-0-6) from Dec. 16-20. Eriksson scored five consecutive team goals from Dec. 16-18 (the only two goals in a 2-1 overtime win vs. Phoenix on Dec. 16 and the first three Stars goals in a 6-5 shootout win vs. Columbus on Dec. 18), marking the second time in franchise history for a player to score five consecutive team goals (also Danny Grant from Nov. 7-13, 1973 over three games).

MODANO STLL HAS IT: Dallas C Mike Modano collected the overtime game-winning goal and added an assist on Dec. 27 vs. Anaheim, the ninth overtime game-winner of his NHL career, and the 89th game-winner overall. Among team leaders, Modano ranks tied for second in goals (12) and game-winning goals (3), and fourth in both assists (12) and scoring (12-12-24). With a goal (game-winner) and an assist on Nov. 30 vs. Edmonton, Modano became the 31st player in NHL history to reach the 1,300-point plateau. Already the Stars all-time franchise leader in games played, goals, assists, points, game-winning goals, power play goals and shorthanded goals, Modano became the highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history last season when his two goals on Nov. 7, 2007 at San Jose put him past Phil Housley on that list.

NEAL LIGHTING THE LAMP: James Neal netted his first career NHL hat trick on Dec. 23 at Toronto, and added a goal (and a helper) on Dec. 27 vs. Anaheim, and among all NHL rookies (as of Jan. 2), Neal ranks tied for second in goals (12) and power play goals (4), and 10th in scoring (12-4-16). Neal has goals in three of the last six games (5-1-6), and collected a career-long three-game scoring streak from Nov. 26-30 (3-1-4), including a career-best two goals on Nov. 26 at Minnesota. Dallas' second round draft pick (No. 33 overall) in the 2005 Entry Draft also added four goals in five games at AHL Manitoba this season.

NISKANEN STREAKING: Matt Niskanen posted his third goal of the season on Dec. 29 vs. San Jose and now has points in five of the last seven games (2-4-6) and in six of the last nine (2-5-7). He collected his first multiple-point game of the season (1-1-2) on Dec. 20 at Ottawa.

RIBEIRO HAS POINTS IN SIX OF SEVEN: Dallas center Mike Ribeiro earned his 26th assists of the season on Dec. 31 vs. New Jersey, and has points in six of the last seven games (2-8-10) and in seven of the last nine games (3-9-12). Leading the team and ranking tied for 10th in the NHL in assists as of Jan. 2, Ribeiro netted the 100th goal of his NHL career on Dec. 23 at Toronto. He has eight multiple-point games this season, including a career-high five-point night at NY Islanders on Oct. 23 (1-4-5). His four assists on Oct. 23 tied a career best, set previously on Dec. 18, 2003 vs. Nashville.

RICHARDS ON A ROLL: Stars C Brad Richards posted three assists on Dec. 31 vs. New Jersey, giving him points in six of the last seven games (4-9-13). He has multiple point efforts in four of those seven contests, and has a team-high 12 multiple-point games in 2008-09. Richards had a career-high-tying four-game goal-scoring streak (4-5-9) from Dec. 18-27, and leads Dallas' scoring list with 34 points (10 goals, 24 assists). He is also first on the club in shots (103) and ranks second in assists (24) and tied for fourth in goals (10). Richards is scheduled to appear in his 600th career NHL game tonight.

SYDOR HAS MILESTONES IN SIGHT: Now in his third stint with the Dallas Stars, Darryl Sydor has several career milestones in sight. Sydor is two games shy of 1,200 career NHL games (1,198), four goals shy of 100 career NHL goals (96), five assists shy of 400 career NHL assists (395), and nine points shy of 500 career NHL points (491). Sydor ranks 10th in Stars franchise history in assists and is 19th in scoring.

TURCO NEARING FRANCHISE GOALTENDING RECORDS: Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced in a 4-2 win over New Jersey on Dec. 31, and has now won seven of his last 10 starts (7-2-1) and eight of his last 12 (8-3-1). Already the Stars' franchise leader in wins (222), shutouts (33) and assists (15), Marty Turco is nearing two more significant milestones among goaltenders in club history: all-time games played and all-time minutes played. Below is a breakdown of Turco's pursuit of those two records, both held by Cesare Maniago, who tended goal for the Minnesota North Stars from 1967-76.

STARS HAVE THREE PROSPECTS IN WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: Dallas Stars draft pick Jamie Benn, currently playing with the Kelowna Rockets (WHL), was one of 22 players named to the Team Canada roster for the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championships, which will be held in Ottawa, from December 26, 2008 – January 5, 2009. Benn was selected by Dallas in the fifth round (No. 129 overall) in the 2007 Entry Draft, and at the time of his call-up to Team Canada, was third in the Western Hockey League in goals (24) and tied for seventh in scoring, with 45 points (24 goals, 21 assists) in 27 games. Ondrej Roman, selected by Dallas in the fifth round (No. 136 overall) in the 2007 Entry Draft, is skating for Team Czech Republic at the tournament, while Sergei Korostin, the Stars' 2007 third round pick (No. 64 overall) is representing Russia. Roman won the Memorial Cup with the Spokane Chiefs last season, and is skating for Vitkovice in his home country this year. Korostin has 13 points (5-8-13) in 16 games with OHL Peterborough in 2008-09.

SHORTHANDED SUCCESS: The Dallas Stars are one of just three teams in the league to have not allowed a shorthanded goal this season, after surrendering eight shorties in 2007-08. The New York Rangers have allowed the most shorthanded goals in the NHL this season (11). Loui Eriksson netted Dallas' first shorthanded goal of the season on Dec. 31 vs. New Jersey.

STARS HAD NIGHT TO REMEMBER IN TORONTO: The Dallas Stars booked their most emphatic victory of the season on Dec. 23 at Toronto, an 8-2 win over the Maple Leafs. The Stars set new season highs for goals (8), goals in a period (4, 1st period), shots (37) and margin of victory (6). The eight goals were the most for the Stars since an 8-3 victory vs. Minnesota on Dec. 26, 2007. Fifteen Stars registered a point in the game, including eight multiple-point efforts and an assist for goaltender Marty Turco. It was a stellar night for Toronto-area natives, as James Neal recorded his first career NHL hat trick, Trevor Daley earned two assists and Krys Barch netted his third goal of the season.
