Sharks 5, Islanders 3
Despite a late comeback bid, the Islanders lost to the San Jose Sharks, 5-3, Saturday night at HP Pavilion. Ryane Clowe, Mike Grier and Dan Boyle each scored to give the Sharks a 3-0 lead midway through the second period. Richard Park countered with his third goal in two games to put the Islanders on the board at 16:04 of the middle frame. Grier potted his second marker of the night to give the Sharks another three-goal advantage, but Tim Jackman and Thomas Pock each tallied in the final 3:10 to put the Islanders within striking distance. It was too little, too late, though, as Patrick Marleau scored an empty-net goal with 10 seconds remaining to seal the game for San Jose. Evgeni Nabokov made 21 stops for the win, while Joey MacDonald tied a season-high with 42 saves in the loss.

Goaltender Joey MacDonald was named the NHL’s “Third Star of the Month” for November after posting an 8-5-1 record with a 2.64 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. MacDonald, who entered the 2008-09 season with 17 career NHL appearances with Detroit, Boston and the Islanders over a seven-year pro career, led all goaltenders in games (14), minutes (842) and shots faced (439). The 28-year-old Pictou, Nova Scotia native also shared the lead in victories and outdueled opposing goaltenders Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks and Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens in shootout victories on November 17th and November 24th, respectively.

THE BEST OFFENSE STARTS WITH...
Through 40 games, the Islanders’ defense has scored 19 goals and added 55 assists for 74 points. Islanders blueliners are on pace to tally 152 points, which would mark a 32-point increase from last season’s production. Offseason acquisition Mark Streit has been a standout performer, notching eight goals and 24 assists for 32 points. He already surpassed Bryan Berard’s 2007-08 offensive totals (the highest among any Islanders’ blueliner) in just his 31st game of the season. Here is a closer look at how the Islanders’ defense corps has produced so far…

HATS OFF...
On December 11th, Petr Sykora of the Pittsburgh Penguins ended the longest streak in NHL history for a player who had at least two goals in a game, but no hat tricks. Sykora previously had 38 two-goal games without getting a third, far surpassing the previous record of 28 games by Hall of Fame defenseman Larry Murphy. Phoenix’s Shane Doan is now on top of the list for active players with two-goal games, but no hat tricks. He is joined by two Islanders (Mike Sillinger, Mike Comrie) who have also never scored three in a contest. Here is a list of the active leaders for two-goal games with no hat tricks…

THIS WEEK IN ISLANDERS HISTORY...
January 2, 1986 Mike Bossy scores his 500th career goal in his 674th NHL game, a 7-5 win against Boston.

PROJECT HOPE...
From December 26 through January 6, a youth hockey team from Nassau County and their families, along with a contingent of Islanders executives, will embark on the journey of a lifetime to the inaugural Charles B. Wang Ice Hockey Project Hope Tournament in Harbin, China. Project Hope is the unprecedented, multi-faceted, education initiative that undoubtedly changes the lives of young athletes forever. It helps to spread the joys of hockey to youths in China by providing equipment, coaching clinics and building rinks. The tournament will consist of five teams: three from China – Jiamusi, Harbin and Qiqihar – Ilves from Finland and the Mustangs of the Nassau County Hockey League. The Mustangs, who will be known as Team USA, are coached by Bill Nimmo and will also be represented by Nassau County Hockey Director Mark Lamarr. The Mustangs earned the right to represent the United States by taking part in the Islanders ‘Pucks Into Bucks’ fundraising program, which allows the Islanders to support various organizations through the sale of Islanders game tickets. The Mustangs raised $78,720 by selling those tickets.

SOUND TIGERS UPDATE...
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers – the Islanders’ AHL affiliate – are 22-9-2-2 after losing at Albany (the Hurricanes' affiliate), 3-2, in overtime on Saturday night. Through 35 games, the Sound Tigers rank second in the East Division with 48 points. See the Islanders "In the System" Report for a further breakdown of the team so far this season...
