Nashville Predators Notes

TONIGHT’S STORYLINES
The Predators and Oilers meet for the third of four times – and for the second time in Edmonton – tonight at Rexall Place. The last time Nashville traveled to northern Alberta was on Dec. 28. That night, the Oilers claimed their first victory in the series since March 5, 2006, a stretch of nine straight wins – and two season series sweeps – by the Predators. In the first Preds-Oil clash of 2008-09 on Oct. 30 at the Sommet Center, Nashville used multi-point efforts from Shea Weber (1g-1a) and Ryan Suter (2a), in addition to Pekka Rinne’s first win of the season (28 saves), to top the Oilers for the sixth consecutive time on Sommet Center ice. In the past 10 games of the series, Nashville has scored four or more goals on seven occasions. This is Nashville’s 20th all-time trip to Edmonton, and since being swept in its inaugural season (1998-99), the Predators are 10-5-2 on the prairie.

Vernon Fiddler, an Edmonton native, has nine points (4g-5a) in 11 games against his hometown team, and has 20 points (8g-12a) in 26 games against the two Alberta teams. In 246 games against the rest of the NHL, he has amassed 67 points (33g-34a)… Rinne and Dan Ellis are a combined 5-1-0 against the Oilers for their careers, with Ellis posting a 2.66 goals against average and a .911 save percentage and Rinne a 1.36 GAA and a .964 SV% … Edmonton is the only Western Conference team Weber is averaging a point-a-game or greater against, with nine points (5g-4a) in nine career games… Jason Arnott, who was an All-Rookie Team member and Calder Trophy runner-up as a member of the Oilers in 1993-94, has 20 points (8g-12a) in 24 career games against his former team. Arnott amassed 239 points (100g-139a) in his first 286 NHL games with the Oilers from 1993-98 before being traded to New Jersey along with Bryan Muir on Jan. 4, 1998 for Valeri Zelepukin and Bill Guerin.

Milestones attained against the Edmonton Oilers
Martin Erat - Passed Greg Johnson and Scott Hartnell for third on the franchise’s all-time goals list (94) on Dec. 28, 2008 at Edmonton. He had his only career hat trick on March 4, 2008.

Jerred Smithson - Played his first game as a Predator on November 8, 2005.

PREDS ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY
This is only the second time in franchise history the Predators have played a game on Super Bowl Sunday, and the first since their inaugural season. In a Jan. 31, 1999 matinee game, the Phoenix Coyotes used multi-point performances from Keith Tkachuk (1g-2a) and Daniel Briere (2a) to top the Preds 5-1 at the Sommet Center. Greg Johnson scored Nashville’s lone goal while shorthanded. The Denver Broncos topped the Atlanta Falcons 34-19 later that day in Super Bowl XXXIII.

SPECIAL TEAMS SUCCESS
The Predators have eight power-play goals in the last nine games, going 8-for-37 (22%) since Jan. 8 vs. Pittsburgh. Prior to the current stretch, Nashville had gone 2-for-30 on the power play during an 11-game span from Dec. 13-Jan. 6. Shea Weber and Jason Arnott are tied for the team lead in PPGs (6), and of Nashville’s 29 man-advantage markers, either J.P. Dumont, Ryan Suter or Martin Erat have reached the scoresheet on all but four of them.

On the penalty kill, Nashville has allowed just Nashville has allowed just six power play-goals in the club’s last 20 games, killing off 68-of-74 opportunities against (91.9%) in that span. The last two man-advantage goals the Predators have surrendered have been 5-on-3 goals. They lead the league in most 5-on-3 goals against (9), but are tied for the fifth-fewest 5-on-4 goals against (25). Keeping the opposition’s power-play at bay has enabled the killers to move up 14 spots in the NHL’s PK rankings, from 20th on Dec. 11 to sixth after Friday’s game.

HOME-HEAVY FEBRUARY
Following a three-game road trip to Western Canada, the Predators will play 10 of their final 14 games in February on Sommet Center ice. It is the most home games in a single month in franchise history. Nashville also starts March off with four of five at home, meaning it will play 14-of-19 at home from Feb. 3 - March 12.

STEVE SULLIVAN RETURNS TO PREDATORS LINEUP
Six-hundred eighty-seven days passed between games for Nashville forward Steve Sullivan, as a back injury kept him out from Feb. 22, 2007 vs. Montreal to Jan. 10, 2009 vs. Chicago. He missed 142 straight regular-season games and 11 more playoff contests during that stretch, but his return made him just the third player in the post-World War II era to miss more than 600 games, then return to action (Jim Peplinski, Calgary and Mario Lemieux, Pittsburgh).

Twelve players – including Sullivan – are left from the 23-man roster the Preds had the last time the Timmons, Ont., native played, including Jason Arnott, J.P. Dumont, Martin Erat, Vernon Fiddler, Dan Hamhuis, David Legwand, Scott Nichol, Sullivan, Ryan Suter, Jordin Tootoo, Shea Weber and Greg Zanon.

Goaltenders Tomas Vokoun (FLA) and Chris Mason (STL), defensemen Marek Zidlicky (MIN) and Kimmo Timonen (PHI), and forwards Scott Hartnell (PHI) and Darcy Hordichuk (CAR) were traded. Peter Forsberg, Paul Kariya (STL) and Vitali Vishnevski (N.J) left via free agency, while Alexander Radulov is currently playing overseas.

Sullivan joined the Predators via trade from Chicago on Feb. 16, 2004 for a 2004 second-round pick (Ryan Garlock) and a 2005 second-round pick (Michael Blunden), and Nashville went 88-46-16 in 150 games with the 5-9, 173-pound right winger until he was sidelined on Feb. 22, 2007, and 82-60-18 in 160 games without him from that point to his return Jan. 10, 2009. Nashville produced 3.23 goals-per-game with Sullivan, and 2.70 without him during the respective stretches.

SHEA WEBER PLAYS IN HIS FIRST ALL-STAR GAME
Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber participated in his first career All-Star Weekend Jan 24-25 in Montreal, becoming the fifth Predator - and first Nashville draft pick - to represent the club in the league’s mid-season classic. The Sicamous, B.C., native did not disappoint, as he kicked the weekend off in Saturday’s Skills Competition by finishing second in the Hardest Shot Competition with a 103.4 mph blast. It was the third hardest shot in competition history. In Sunday’s game, he led all Western Conference skaters in ice time (22:16) and was a +1.

The 6-4, 230-pound blueliner has ranked among the defensive league leaders in goals (14) and points (32) all season, in addition to being second on the Predators in both categories. He leads the team in plus/minus rating, hits and shots on goal – the third-highest total among NHL d-men. Weber is also tied for first on the club in power-play goals and game-winning goals.

Nashville’s third choice, 49th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft held at the Sommet Center, Weber posted a pair of multi-goal games in the season’s first half, and notched a career-high four points (1g-3a) against Columbus on Oct. 18.

Since the National Hockey League reconvened for the 2005-06 season, the Predators have remained among the league leaders in both total wins and home wins (totals as of games played Jan. 30).

TROTZ CLOSING IN ON SOME NHL LEGENDS
With 786 games spent behind the Predators bench, and 345 wins since 1998-99, head coach Barry Trotz is passing some NHL Hall of Famers in games coached and victories with a single NHL Franchise. On Dec. 23 vs. the Florida Panthers, Trotz passed Punch Imlach’s 770 games coached with Toronto from 1958-69, moving him into ninth on that list. Since then, he has move past Sid Abel (Detroit), Jacques Martin (Ottawa) and Bryan Murray (Washington) on the wins with one franchise list. He is now in nith place on the victories list, and less than 20 away from legendary Boston bench boss Art Ross who sits eighth.
